These fierce Aussies! You can’t stop ‘em!
Australian Open quarter finalist, Ash Barty and Priscilla Hon have defeated the US at their home venue on Laykold to reach the Federation Cup semi-finals for the first time in Australian history since 2014!
The Aussies defeated USA competitors, Nicole Melichar and Danielle Collins 6-4 7-5 in the deciding doubles match on Monday 11th February.
Barty was on a winning streak, as earlier that day she had defeated US tennis player Madison Keys in straight sets.
Captain of Australia, Alicia Molik paired the doubles partners in what can only be referred to as the iconic Aussie dynamic duo.
There’s nothing better than coming out to play a live tie for your country – Barty
The games throughout the match were close but the Aussies were able to soldier on breaking the fifth game and holding a pair of break points with a 5-2 lead.
The audience were on the edge of their seat in the second set, as it was game for game until the Aussies broke the USA after outstanding play at the net by Hon and an ace serving performance by Barty.
Hon served for match point while Australia was in the lead 40-0, but her last serve was too strong for the USA to make their way back into the match.
Hon has won her first Federation Cup match for Australia and said she was “honoured to win by Barty’s side.”
