Laykold Masters Float
Tennis
On 21 October 2023, Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill officially opened the upgraded courts at Mount Riverview tennis club. The US Open-quality Laykold Float courts mark a step by the club to rejuvenate its facilities to drive club membership, accessibility and participation.
The iconic blue courts mark a performance boost for the club but there is also a significant environmental benefit to the Sydney community. Designed to lay directly over the club’s worn out synthetic grass courts, the Laykold courts saved about 40 tons of non-biodegradable waste material from going into landfill. With a lifespan of over two decades, the longevity of the courts also ensure they fill years and years of playing time rather than landfill.
Laykold hardcourts are already a second-life product, using recycled materials in the shock absorption system that provides more than 20 percent force reduction. This reduces both player injury and the negative impact of the sport on the environment.
As well as a lower environmental cost, avoiding the removal of the old grass courts provides a financial cost saving during the project delivery which is further extended by increased club revenues driven by the upgraded facilities.
Laykold’s Scott Windus, a former tennis pro and ITF-award-winning coach, is also the club’s secretary who championed the project:
“I’ve been in tennis all my life and I just cannot drive by a court that isn’t busy and wonder – why? Mount Riverview is my local club and I was determined to help revitalise this dilapidated centre and dwindling membership to make tennis more fun and accessible for the local community.
Although I have spent 40+ years on tennis courts, playing and coaching, my time at Laykold has taught me the true value of the courts for the community. A great court safeguards player welfare, keeps players playing for longer and drives club revenues.
Upgrading the surface at Mount Riverview has helped us to enhance the club’s image; in little over a year we increased membership from 20 to 180 and with the help of our green innovation, achieved all this with the smallest possible negative impact on the environment.”
Laykold is the Official Court Surface of the US Open and has been trusted globally for more than 75 years. More than 100 million square metres of Laykold sports surfaces have been installed worldwide since 1970.
Manufactured in Melbourne at an ISO 9001-certified facility, Laykold systems combine international performance standards with Australian production and quality control.
The Laykold Masters range includes traditional acrylic systems as well as advanced cushioned technologies engineered to improve surface consistency, absorb impact and maintain responsive energy return. Cushioned configurations provide up to 20 percent impact protection, helping reduce joint strain and fatigue while preserving the speed and precision expected of a premium hardcourt.
Masters Float, selected for Mount Riverview, incorporates a prefabricated rubber shock pad specifically designed to bridge cracks and moving substrates. The system delivers up to 20–21 percent force reduction and retains up to 98 percent of its cushioning performance over more than a decade.
Mount Riverview required a surface capable of addressing a deteriorating base without full reconstruction. Masters Float was engineered for precisely this scenario, allowing the club to stabilise the existing substrate while achieving a professional-grade finish.
The crack-bridging design reduced structural risk associated with movement in the underlying surface, protecting the long-term integrity of the court. At the same time, the overlay approach eliminated extensive removal works and significantly lowered waste generation.
The integrated shock pad system improves player comfort and recovery, supporting longer playing sessions and broader community participation. Combined with durable US Open-quality topcoats, the system offers consistent ball response, reliable footing, and long-term UV resistance.
Supplied by APT Asia Pacific and delivered through its specialist installation network, the Mount Riverview upgrade demonstrates how a technically engineered hardcourt tennis court solution can enhance asset performance, reduce environmental impact and strengthen club viability.
The advantage does not stop at Mount Riverview. What one club has proven is the significant cost, environmental, and performance advantage there is for clubs across Australia to benefit from as the Australian summer tennis season enters full swing. Local R&D and manufacturing, with the benefit of global expertise and skilled local installation teams, Laykold Courts provide an Advantage All.
